John Irvine joined WightFibre as CEO in 2012. A role in which he turned the company around and recently attracted a £35M investment to deploy full-fibre, gigabit (1,000Mb) broadband to 65,000 homes and businesses across the island.
Before joining WightFibre, John worked for 10 years in the leadership teams of a number of telecoms companies, from small start-ups to large corporates, including: Inclarity, Level3, Truphone and Verizon. This followed 10 years at BT, where he held a variety of senior management positions, with a focus on global business communications. Prior to this John spent seven years with technology giant IBM, initially as a programmer analyst and then moving to specialise in data networking technologies.
This career long blend of technical knowledge and commercial experience enables John to bridge the gap from simply technology that is clever – to technology that is useful; translating technical capabilities to deliver real business benefit. Always an early adopter of new technologies John learnt the hard way, that new technologies must be easy to use if they are to truly succeed.
John holds a degree in Computer Science from the University of Ulster and an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, North Carolina. John also served 28 years in the Army Reserve retiring as a Lt Col in 2008.
